The Art of Ponies: The Galloping!

Friendship really is magic with this special collaboration

In partnership with Extra Life - and in the spirit of love, friendship and beyond - each purchase from this collection raises funds for the Seattle Children's Hospital. We recently sat down with Dawn, Sr Art Director on the project to talk about the breathtaking art behind this collaboration.

What was it like to work on this special project?

Magic’s game mechanic, by nature, is aggressive. Opponents play cards on the “battlefield”, to deal damage, and tick your opponent’s life counter down to zero to win the game. By contrast, My Little Pony (MLP) is built around themes like friendship and cooperation. Additionally, the immersive realism and painterly aesthetic for Magic’s TCG expression is very different from the vectored, line dependent, stylized shapes that are MLP’s aesthetic. It was challenging to strike the right balance between the two brands, and find that sweet spot on the Venn Diagram that satisfies both.

What was it like diving into the world of My Little Pony for this project, have you ever worked on that brand before?

No, I work full time on the Magic Creative Team building new worlds and working with artists to bring those worlds to life. I was part of a small team of Magic: The Gathering creators (including a writer, game designer, developer, graphic designers for card frame and packaging) who were pulled together specifically to create the Magic version of My Little Pony. I’m pretty sure none of us had worked on MLP before Ponies: The Galloping. It was an amazing experience for a great cause.

Tell us a little about yourself – how long have you been with Hasbro? What brands do you work on? Do you play MTG?

I play Magic (not very well) and D&D, and have been in this industry for 25+ years. My time began at TSR, Inc. in 1992 doing graphic design and art direction for Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition and Planescape. Wizards of the Coast bought the company and moved us all out to Seattle in 1997 where I plunged into the formidable task of redefining the look and feel of Dungeons & Dragons for 3rd Edition. Some of my other favorite projects include the Dark•Matter RPG, Call of Cthulhu d20 RPG, Hecatomb TCG, and more novel series covers than I can remember. I also spent about six years working on the Charm Angel and Duelmaster’s TCGs that are released exclusively in Japan before finally joining the Magic Creative and Worldbuilding team in 2013. I feel really lucky to work on these amazing projects; can't wait to see what's next.
